Jonathan Smith is a documentary filmmaker who tells stories about the South. He has produced several award-winning shorts on topics such as restorative justice, traditional skills, and local foodways. He has contributed to other documentary projects in the role of drone operator for aerial footage, audio recordist, and camera operator. He received an MFA degree in Documentary Expression from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi and holds a MA in anthropology from East Carolina University. He has worked and traveled the South as a historic archaeologist, researching cemeteries, burial patterns, and folklore as well as work in the field of cultural resource management on projects ranging from disaster response to pipeline survey. When he’s not making films he enjoys blacksmithing and woodworking, and can usually be found hiding in the woods or in his office.
